The Patricia Hautz Letter - A Suspicious Riverside Letter
The dark poetry below was found on the underside of a desk in the campus library Cheri Jo Bates frequented. Many think this note may be another taunt from the Zodiac. Like the similar linking of the Patricia Hautz letter with the Zodiac, CrimeShadows.com disagrees with this assessment. Read the following for more information:
Sick of living / unwilling to die
cut,
clean.
if red,
clean.
blood spurting,
dripping,
spilling;
all over her new
dress
oh well,
it was red
anyway.
life draining into an
uncertain death.
she won't
die.
this time
someone ll find her.
just wait till
next time.
rh
It sounds like a suicide note. "Sick of living" sounds very much like the words of someone suffering from depression. "Unwilling to die" may express the desperation of someone who is crying out for help. The initials indicate that the writer wanted to clue the reader in to his/her identity, perhaps hoping someone would recognise her. The writer, if suicidal, was more than likely a female speaking of herself in third person ("all over her new dress"). The writing was found on the underside of the desk (or the backside of a desktop), The desk may have even been in a storage position. The writer was most likely alone, contemplating a suicide attempt at the time of its writing. The only reason the poem received the attention it did was because it was discovered around the time of Cheri Jo Bates murder. Cheri Jo Bates died. Nobody found her. She did not have a "next time." She was not wearing a red dress. She was not cut with the "clean" blade of a razor. She was brutally stabbed with a small knife.
The Zodiac, was not secretive in his taunts and warnings, only about his identity. He sent his writings directly to his audience. Why would the Zodiac say "she won't die. this time someone'll find her". The Zodiac was a confident killer. It seems that the writer intended to attempt suicide and be discovered bleeding to death. It seems she hoped that the discovery of the note would get her the attention she was desperately seeking.
While I am sure there will be disagreement on these conclusions, I feel certain they are close to the mark.
I found this interesting event ten years prior to Paul Stine's murder. There may be no actual relevance of this article to Stine's murder. Still, it remains an interesting event in the life of a confirmed Zodiac victim.
Analysis of the October 13, 1969 Zodiac Killer letter.
From the San Mateo Times - January 12, 1974
DC Churches Searched After 'Zodiac' Calls
Daly City police searched every church in that city last night and early today because San Francisco police and various news outlets received an anonymous phone call from a male voice who claimed to be the infamous killer Zodiac. According to police reports, the caller, after announcing that he was Zodiac, said that he had killed a woman and placed her body in a Daly City church. Daly City Police Sgt. Ralph Warren said his department was notified of the call prior to 11 p.m. by San Francisco police. An immediate search was carried out, lasting beyond midnight, said Warren, in which all churches and church grounds in the city were checked with negative results. According to Warren, surveillance will be maintained at all the city's churches, although police are skeptical and suspect the calls were a hoax. There are approximately 15 churches in Daly City.
While researching the Judy Lichti murder I came across this story from the Long Beach Independent Press-Telegram July 6, 1969:
Fusillade Fired at Couple in Parked Car Kills Girl
Vallejo — A young woman was shot to death and her companion was critically wounded Saturday moments after they parked a car at Blue Rock Springs Park. Police said a gunman opened a front door of the car and fired several shots with a semi-automatic pistol. Killed was Darlene E. Ferrin, 22, of Vallejo. Michael Mageau, 19, was reported in critical condition at Kaiser Hospital with wounds in the head, stomach, and leg.
The story with the misinformation was an AP story, and I venture there were lots of cities and papers in 1969 that do not have online archives today. I don't think it would be a stretch to say he read this article or a similar one. Otherwise, why would he make a point of writing:
"On the 4th of July: I did not open the car door. The window was rolled down all ready."
Zodiac liked the papers to get things right when it came to his deeds.
